Alexander M. Betts, Jr., better known to his friends and family as "AJ Betts," was reunited with his heavenly Father on the 27th of July, 2013. AJ was 16 years old at the time of his tragic passing in Des Moines, Iowa. A public visitation will be held at Oakwood United Methodist Church at 400 NE 56th Street, Pleasant Hill, Iowa from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 1. Funeral services will be held at Oakwood United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. Friday, August 2. The burial service will be at Rising Sun Cemetery in Pleasant Hill, Iowa immediately thereafter. A candlelight vigil will later be held at 8 p.m. Friday evening, August 2 at Haines Park in Altoona, Iowa.
AJ was born to Sheryl J. Moore (Sundberg) and Alexander L. Betts, Sr. on January 24, 1997 in Des Moines, Iowa. He was entering his junior year at Southeast Polk High School at the time of his passing. His happiest moments were spent drawing anime, performing in show choir, participating in marching band, acting in school plays, and spending time with his friends and family. He was a light to everyone that knew him, always laughing and smiling. He committed his short life to loving and helping others. To his family, he will always be remembered as the kindest human being they have ever known. Even in death, AJ continued to give. Opting to be an organ donor just six months prior to his passing, he was able to save numerous lives as a result of his decision.
AJ is survived by his parents, Sheryl J. Moore and Alexander L. Betts, Sr., as well as his step-parents, Jeremiah P. Moore and Angie J. Betts. Also surviving AJ are his sisters, Alexis L. Betts and Aaliyah J. Betts of Pleasant Hill and his step-sisters, Shelby A. Edmonds and Riley E. Edmonds-Betts of Bethalto, Illinois. His godmother, Victoria Peterson, is joined by a host of aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, and other family members that survive the Iowa teen.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be deposited to the "One Voice for AJ" fund, held at Valley Bank, in Pleasant Hill, Iowa.
