Obituary

Alan Craig Mazzola, 68, passed away December 26, 2013 at Iowa Veterans Hospital in Des Moines. A memorial service will be held at Iles Westover Chapel on Friday, January 10, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, near Van Meter, IA.

Craig was born January 6, 1945 in Chariton, Iowa to Sam and Valaria Mazzola. He was raised in Des Moines where he frustrated his sister and teachers. As a teenager he sang with the Roadrunners and the Playboys bands.

Craig joined the US Marine Corps and served bravely in the Vietnam War. While in California, he met Peggy Johnson; they married and started a family - three towheaded boys. He joined and continued to work in the trucking industry until he went back home to Iowa in 1994. There he reignited his childhood flame with Jan, and became "Papa Do" to Jan's children and grandchildren. He also made a career change into jewelry sales, which he surprisingly loved. He spent valuable time with Sam and his sister, and it enabled his sons to form a bond with the Iowa side of their family-something for which they are eternally grateful. His hobbies included serious television viewing, cooking & eating great food, and mediocre golf. He had a deep love for children and all of his pets that he owned through the years. Craig was always known to have a very witty sense of humor and was never rendered speechless.

Craig is survived by his loving companion, Jan de Regnier; children, Matthew (Megan-expecting), Michael and Mark; step-children, Jennie (Kevin) Davidson, Kristen (Steve) Moisen and David Gill; nephews and nieces, Andrea (Jeremy) Bryan and their children, Mackenzie, Carter, Mallory and Bennett; and Joe McEniry and his son, Andrew; grandchildren, Kael and Ivie, Camryn, Kinley, Hailie, Tailor and Alaina; great-grandchildren, Kennadee and Bella; sister, Sue (Bill) Holin; his extended Johnson Family; sisters-in-law, Jan de Regnier, Marla de Regnier, Diana de Regnier, Mickey (Mike) Condon, Judy Messer and Sue (Bernie) Lawless; brother-in-law, Bill Eklund; niece, Carly Condon; uncle, Gary (Darlene) Breeden; friends, John and Judy Replogle, Lois Shea and his two dogs, Carmel and Pogo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Michael Mazzola; niece, Melissa McEniry, brother-in-law, David de Regnier and friend, William Shea.

The family would like to extend a very Special thank you to the VA Hospital staff for their care and support.
