Jim Broderick, 77, passed away Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Funeral services will be held 10 am Saturday, February 27, 2010 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waukee, of which he was a lifelong member, with burial to follow at Waukee Cemetery.
Jim was born on June 5, 1932 in Des Moines to Leo and Honora (Maloney) Broderick. He graduated from St. Thomas Academy in St. Paul and served in the US Navy from 1951 - 1955. Jim married Vivian June Hines of Washington, Iowa in 1959 and made their home in Waukee where they raised their family. In addition to farming, he was employed at Qwest Communications and owned and operated Broderick's Bread Basket with his wife. Jim was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, National Farm Organization, and the Telephone Pioneers.
Jim enjoyed sports of all kinds, especially those that involved his children and grandchildren. He will be remembered as a loving Father and Grandfather.
Jim is survived by his children, Mike (Louanne) Broderick, Theresa Broderick, and Margaret Diehl, all of Waukee, Joe (Beth) Broderick of Dubuque, Rita (Tim) Glahn of Johnston, Brenda Broderick and Matt (Sara) Broderick, both of Chicago, Denise Broderick and Shane (Anne) Broderick, both of Des Moines, and Shannon Broderick of St. Paul; his siblings, Mary K. "Tootsie" (Fran) Riley of Davenport, Jody (Bill) McCarthy of West Des Moines and Pat (Suzy) Broderick of Rock Island, IL.; grandchildren, Jake, Jim, Leo, Molly, Marty, Shane, Danny, Clare, Sally, Vivian, Katie, Joe, David and Charlie; and one great grandchild, Bradley. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Vivian, son Martin and his brother Ed.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 pm Friday, February 26, at St. Boniface Catholic Church where a vigil service will be held at 7:30pm.
