Obituary

Jean Volk, 83, died Friday, March 12, 2010, at Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 15, at St. Boniface Catholic Church with a memorial graveside service to be held 10 a.m., Tuesday at the Pleasantville Cemetery in Pleasantville, Iowa.

Jean was born in Des Moines to Sam Caligiuri of Umbriatram, Italy, and Verda Schrick of Perry, Iowa. She graduated from St. Joseph Academy in 1944 and in 1946 Jean married Ed Volk from Aberdeen, South Dakota. They farmed in Colo, West Des Moines and Pleasantville as they raised their family of four children. After moving to Pleasantville Jean began working at Iowa Methodist Hospital in the Maternity Ward for ten years. Jean and Ed played an instrumental role in developing the Downtown Farmer's Market and participated as vendors for ten years.

Following the death of her husband Ed, Jean went to DMACC to improve her computer and clerical skills and worked in the Tax Department at Wells Fargo. In 1993 she sold the farm in Pleasantville and moved to Waukee. Jean continued to work at Wells Fargo and after 12 years she retired at the age of 70. Following retirement, Jean spent time volunteering for the Waukee Library, Waukee School District and St. Boniface Church. She enjoyed playing cards and spending time with her family.

Jean is survived by her children, Mark (Beatrice) Volk of Rockford, Iowa, Kathy (Joe) Follett of Waukee, Pat (Lisa) Volk of Champagne, Illinois and Julie (Joel) Villines of Waukee; eight grandchildren, Michelle, Stephanie, Jonathan, Allie, Ashley, Brittney, Nathan and Cole; and three sisters, Rosie (Don) Quinn of Prole, Iowa, Pat (Jim) Severson of Honolulu, Hawaii and Lu Enlow of Decatur, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Samuel and Verda (Schrick) Caligiuri; and two sisters, Jo Anderson and Tootie Weichman.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday at St. Boniface Church in Waukee where a vigil service will be held at 4 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's and Related Disorders Association or Spurgeon Manor.
