Ryan Thomas Henderson, 21, died accidentally September 5, 2010, in Des Moines, Iowa. Ryan's memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 11 at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 6630 Nall Avenue, Mission, Kansas, with visitation being held at the church from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
Ryan was born November 13, 1988 in Merriam, Kansas, the son of William and Kathryn Henderson. He graduated from Shawnee Mission West High School in 2007. Ryan was a senior at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa where he was a writing major, a Dean's list student, recipient of the President's Scholarship and a music scholarship, and an alum of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
In addition to his passion for writing, Ryan was a gifted artist and talented guitarist, focusing on classical guitar while studying at Drake. While in high school, he was the lead guitarist for Overland Express, the Shawnee Mission West jazz band. Also a leader of the jazz and classical music band, "Old Dog and the New Tricks", Ryan and the band provided the musical entertainment at the Kansas City Jubilee Film Festival awards dinner at the famous "Blue Room."
Ryan was a varsity letter winner in track and cross-country while in high school. He also was a Kansas Scholar, four-year academic letter winner, scholar-athlete award winner and a recipient of the President's Award for Academic Excellence. Throughout high school, Ryan was an active participant in Episcopal church youth group activities, serving as a counselor for youth spiritual weekends, working for a week each summer in the inner city of Kansas City and participating in church diocesan band.
Ryan is survived by his parents, William and Kathryn, brother Connor and sister Paige. He is also survived by his grandmothers, Barbara Tugaudis of Lenexa, Kansas and Elizabeth Henderson of Des Moines, Iowa and by his uncles and aunts, Thomas Henderson and Nan Horvat, Mary and Timothy Gesiriech, all of Johnston, Iowa, Gale and Roger Tambling of Long Grove, Illinois and Ellen and Robert Flesch of Shorewood, Illinois, and many cousins and close friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shawnee Mission West Jazz Band or the Kansas City Community Kitchen, a ministry of Episcopal Community Services.
