Willie Nixon, 82, died Saturday, February 6, 2010 at home. Funeral services will be held 11am Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at Assumption Catholic Church in Granger with burial to follow at Beaver Catholic Cemetery.
Willie was born in Des Moines and attended Assumption School in Granger. He married Gwendolyn Seivert August 29, 1949 at Assumption Church. They made their home in Woodward/Granger area where they raised their eleven children. Instilling a strong work ethic in his children was essential in his eyes. Willie loved farming and raising cattle. He also worked at John Deere Des Moines Works where he retired in 1987.
Some of Willie's fondest memories were taking his family on summer vacations in Minnesota, where he taught them to water ski and play cards. He and Gwen enjoyed their trips to Hawaii and most recently their winters in Laughlin, NV. Spending time with his children and grandchildren and catching up with what was going on in their lives gave him great pleasure.
Willie is survived by his children; David (Lori) Nixon of Woodward, Timothy Nixon of Las Vegas, NV, Jace (Gina) Nixon of Madrid, Joseph (Kathy) Nixon of Granger, Bridget Nixon and Amy (Bobby) Nicol, both of Ankeny, Kate (Brad) Battani of Urbandale and Melinda (Dave) Olson Des Moines; 24 grandchildren, six great grandchildren and his sister, Gertrude Schulte of Warrensburg, MO. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Gwen Nixon, daughters, Jane Nixon and Deborah Sloss, son Frank Nixon, and his brother Joseph.
Visitation begins 3pm Tuesday at Assumption Catholic Church in Granger where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7pm and a vigil service will be held at 7pm.
