Marilyn Mae (McIntyre) Gehring, 84, of Des Moines, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2017. Marilyn was born a farm girl in Hawkeye, Iowa on May 30, 1932, to Wallace and Phyllis McIntyre. She was the middle child with an older sister Lois and a younger brother, Wallace ("Wally"). She graduated with honors from Hawkeye High School in 1949 and that same year she married the love of her life, Gerald (Jerry) Gehring of Elgin, Iowa. Jerry and Marilyn moved from Mason City to Des Moines in the spring of 1974. Marilyn began working for Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Human Resources as an Employment Specialist. She worked full and then part-time there for over twenty years.

Marilyn enjoyed many things including photography (award winning), reading, gardening, decorating, and all things domestic - sewing, cooking, even ironing and cleaning, including hanging clothes on her clothes line. She traveled extensively with Jerry and especially loved visiting her ancestral home in Ireland. Marilyn also liked a good garage sale, a brisk walk, but more than anything, spending time with her family and her dog, Lucy. Marilyn belonged to First United Methodist Church in Des Moines for over 40 years. Her faith, strength and positive spirit were evident in how she lived her life.

Those left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband of 67 years, Jerry; son, Wes Gehring (Cassie Garrett) of Muncie, Indiana; daughter, Suzanne (John) Wetherell of Des Moines, Iowa; granddaughters, Sarah (Rick) Davenport, Emily (Matt) Long, and Elizabeth Wetherell; great - grandchildren, Michael, Lily, Emmett, and Ruby; her brother, Wallace (La Fonda) McIntyre: and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.

A celebration of her life is planned for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend with burial to follow in Hawkeye, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the animal shelter of your choice.
