Obituary

Iola Mae (Hunt) Tollakson, 83, passed away February 8, 2017 at Hospice Kavanagh House, Des Moines. She was born August 17, 1933, in Alden, Hardin County, Iowa, to Charles Dewey Hunt and Ruth Celia Mitchell Hunt. She grew up in Alden, graduating from Alden Public High School with the class of 1950. Iola attended Ellsworth Junior College in Iowa Falls, IA, and North Iowa Area Community College, Mason City, IA.

She married Robert (Bob) Tollakson on July 18, 1952. They are parents of four children: Rick, Candace, Elizabeth, and Virginia "Ginger". Iola was employed as a secretary and/or bookkeeper at various businesses in Iowa Falls, IA, Ralston, IA, Hampton, IA, Forrest City, IA, and Des Moines, IA. She retired from Homesteaders Life Company, Des Moines, in 1996. She was a Girl Scout leader, girl's 4-H club leader, Junior Lutherans leader, children's choir director, Sunday school teacher, and a foster parent. She held many offices in her church's women's groups, and was a board member and president of the Southeastern Iowa Synodical Women's Organization of the Evangelical Lutheran Church; a member of Grand View Lutheran Church, Des Moines; American Legion Auxiliary, Grimes; Waukee Woman's Club, Waukee.

Iola enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, reading a good book, taking a quiet walk, her church (especially the women's group), and life in general.

Iola was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers: James, Nathan, and Delbert Hunt; and one sister, Luella Maine. She is survived by her husband, Robert, of Johnston, IA; her children: Rick Tollakson of West Des Moines, IA; Candace (Ed Kelly) Tollakson of Ankeny, IA; Elizabeth (Jeffrey) Jensen of Bowling Green, KY and Virginia "Ginger" (Michael) Dinsmore of Lexington, KY; thirteen grandchildren: Alissa (Daryl) Rauser, Eric (Michelle) Lambi, TJ (Ashley) Tollakson, Kristen Davis, Brice (Lovely) Lambi, Jessica Tollakson, Jonathan (Danika Sabino) Stech, , Emily (Tony Orlandi) Jensen, Grant Lambi, Kerri (Justin Miller) Dinsmore, Rachel Jensen, Seth Dinsmore and Samuel Stech; nine great-grandchildren, Dylan Rauser, Tyson Rauser, Tegan Rauser, James Davis, Cael Lambi, Kendall Lambi, Theodore Tollakson, Drew Tollakson; and Frankie Mae Tollakson; sisters, Lola Last of Alden, IA, Mavis Day of Vancouver, WA; brother, Russell (Judy) Hunt of Monroe, WA; sisters-in-law, Betty Hunt of Williams, IA, Margaret Anderson of Ellsworth, IA and Eloise Hunt of Hayward, MN; as well as many other relatives and friends.

A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, April 2, 2017 at Grand View Lutheran Church, 2930 E. 13th Street, Des Moines. Private burial will be held at a later date at Stavanger Cemetery in Garden City, IA.
