Wayne Allen Guttenfelder, 75, of Waukee, passed away on April 10, 2017 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 22 at 10:30 am at the Waukee United Methodist Church. Visitation will be Friday, April 21 from 5-7 pm at the church.

Wayne was born on May 9, 1941 in Ogden, Iowa to Allen and Mildred Guttenfelder. He graduated from Menlo High School in 1959 and later attended courses at Drake University to prepare for his career as a draftsman and steel estimator in the construction industry.

He met his high school sweetheart, Carol (Patterson) of Greenfield, in 1958. They shared 54 years of marriage, living in Des Moines and West Des Moines before moving to Waukee in 1974.

In Wayne's earlier years, he spent time as a scout master, wood carver, cartoonist and Golden Gloves boxer. More recently, he was an avid stock market trader, practical joker as well as a dedicated and big-hearted husband, father and grandfather. He was a lifelong supporter of Drake athletics and lived just long enough to see his Chicago Cubs win the World Series.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents and step-father Ira Potter of Gilman and best friend George Slushpump of Menlo. Left to cherish his memory are wife Carol, daughter Laura (Greg) Allen of Van Meter; son David (Cassy) Guttenfelder of Minneapolis; grandchildren Maddie, Rachel, Julia and Mae; brothers Gary (Laura) Guttenfelder of Ankeny and Dennis Guttenfelder of Patterson; step siblings Tiara (Lee) Brant of LeGrand; Nieta (Carl) Martin of Garwin; George (Christy Clark) Potter of LaPine, OR; Kevin (Sheryl) Potter of Benton, KY; Kate (Gerald) Brown of Whitten; several nieces and nephews, relatives and many dear friends.

For 12 years, Wayne fought courageously after suffering a stroke in 2005 and being diagnosed with lymphoma in 2014. His family would like to offer special thanks for the kind care and support provided by staff of Younkers Rehab and Penn Medical, the staff and fellow patients at the First Teaching Hospital of Tianjin, China; Trina Radske-Suchan and her staff at the Healthy Living Center; and Dr. Thomas Buroker and staff at the John Stoddard Cancer Center.

In lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be offered to: Community Health Partners, c/o Trina Radske-Suchan, 6601 Westown Parkway Suite 200, West Des Moines, IA 50266
