Obituary

Carolyn Rae Lehnus, 56, passed away peacefully with her husband by her side on Monday, July 3, 2017, after a courageous 11-year battle with breast cancer at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, IA. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, August 4, 2017 at 6 PM at Grace Lutheran Church, 3010 52nd St, Des Moines, IA 50310 . The family will receive friends after the services until 8:30 p.m. A private inurnment will be held at a later date.

Carolyn was born January 18, 1961, in Council Bluffs, IA, to Robert and Joan (Reece) Pauls. She graduated from Atlantic High School in 1979 and The American Institute of Business in 1981. Carolyn was united in marriage to Michael Lehnus on September 26, 1981, in Atlantic, Iowa.

Carolyn worked as a Client Implementation Manager for the Principal Financial Group for 20 years. Prior work experience included 10 years in advertising services at the Meredith Corporation, Schwartz Metals Group and part-time work at Target. She was a member of the Kansas City Chiefs Red Coaters and a member of the Des Moines Performing Arts Center. Carolyn was also active with the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. An avid Kansas City Chiefs fan and season ticket holder, Carolyn never missed a game in 24 years. She loved going on the annual Red Coaters away game trip. Other favorites for Carolyn included spending time at the Iowa State Fair every summer, spending time at their lake house on the Lake of the Ozarks with her husband and friends, knitting scarves which she donated to local schools, scrapbooking and baking. Carolyn had an infectious smile and found it easy to make friends.

Carolyn is survived by her husband of 35 years, 9 months, Michael Lehnus, father-in-law, Leslie Lehnus, sister-in-law, Lisa Lehnus, brother-in-law, Kirk (Karla) Lehnus, nephew, Keaton Carter, niece, Karissa (Jacob) Lucas, and several great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Joan Pauls, and her mother-in-law, Jackie Lehnus.
We would like to thank Dr. Tom Buroker, Michele, Julie, the nurses in the Stoddard Treatment Center, and the nurses and staff of Iowa Methodist Medical Center - Powel 3 Adult Oncology Floor, who provided compassionate and loving care.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or the donor’s choice. On-line condolences will be welcomed at IlesCares.com.
