Obituary

Belva Jeane (Taylor) Eldridge (Grammy Bel) 84, passed away Wednesday, July 12 at Iowa Methodist Hospital. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm Saturday, July 15, 2017, at Westover Funeral Home in Des Moines. Services will be held at Westover at 2:00 pm Sunday, July 17, and burial will be at 10:00 am Monday July 18, at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Belva was born April 27, 1933, in Jefferson, Iowa to Verne and Zelpha (Gardner) Taylor. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1951. Belva attended Drake University and Broadlawns Hospital while pursuing a nursing degree. Belva went on to become the Head Charge Nurse at Blank Children’s Hospital and worked extensively with children in the polio ward including those confined to iron lungs.

She married George Eldridge on February 14, 1964 and spent the next several decades living in numerous states and countries such as Bermuda, Japan and her favorite, Alaska. Jefferson remained home in her heart. As an Air Force Officer’s wife, Belva demonstrated great multi-tasking skills when George was frequently required to serve remote time.

Belva loved to play the piano for her kids and grandkids. She donated many hours volunteering for the Red Cross and was active in her kid’s school lives. Belva most enjoyed living her life as a caretaker to her husband, children, friends, and family. She also loved cooking and baking and decorating for holidays. She enjoyed cake decorating, tole painting, bowling and following her beloved Cardinals Baseball Team. Her favorite pastime was relaxing with a steaming hot pot of coffee and reading a good murder mystery.

George and Belva retired to Bloomington, Minnesota where they lived happily for 28 years. In 2008, they returned to Iowa to be closer to family, residing in Clive.

Belva is survived by her three children, daughter, Kristey Baerwald of Centennial, CO, son, Jay (Ann) Eldridge of Waconia, MN and Kathleen (Forrest) Aldrich of Urbandale, IA; 10 grandchildren, Leisa Rich, Christopher (Debbie) Deerwester, Nicholas (Roxie) Deerwester, David and Emily Baerwald, Kaitlyn Aldrich (fiancé Jackson Mores), Caroline and Marianne Aldrich, and Lauren and Morgan Eldridge; 10 great grandchildren, Madelynn, Elizabeth and Abigail Rich, Connor, Taylor, Gracie, Kylie, and Aiden Deerwester and Tyler and Alexa Deerwester, and her constant companion, Kitty Kitty. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, father, Verne Taylor, mother, Zelpha Taylor and her grandson, Gus Aldrich.
