Obituary

Elaine Yiannias Avgerinos, 89, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on August 10, 2017, at Kennybrook Village in Grimes. Beloved wife of the late James N. Avgerinos, cherished mother of Nick (Connie), Barbara (Tony) Perkins, and Dianne (Nick) Kotsogiannis, loving grandmother of Jim, Stephanie (Daniel), Jimmy, Maria, Angela, Ted and Anna; dear sister of Nickas, John, Vicki and the late Andrew; daughter of the late James N. Yiannias and Stella Poulos Yiannias.

Following her childhood years in her treasured Dubuque, Iowa, Elaine earned a degree in Art Education from Rockford College; and spent a summer studying at the Art Institute of Chicago. Elaine taught junior high art in Dubuque before meeting the love of her life, Jim (owner of Uptown Pharmacy), with whom she built a nurturing and loving home through 50 years of marriage.

Blessed with remarkable artistic and musical talents, combined with a warm and vibrant personality, Elaine gave unselfishly throughout her life to a wide range of religious, civic and charitable activities. She represented the Greek Orthodox community at various city events with lively presentations, piano performances and displays of Hellenic artifacts. Elaine founded the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George library in the 1970’s, played the church organ, served as the church artist and was an active lifetime member of the Ladies Philoptochos and Daughters of Penelope.

Guided by a deep interest in helping and educating others, Elaine taught art to at-risk youth and intellectually disabled adults; painted wall murals at a domestic violence shelter; and volunteered at nursing homes. Elaine mixed her creativity and love of cooking with annual cookie painting parties for children and food demonstrations at the YWCA. She was an Honorary Life Member of the American Association of University Women. Elaine and her husband were avid Des Moines Symphony and Metro Opera concert goers. Her most fulfilling role was that of mother, wife, grandmother, daughter, sister, relative and friend.

Elaine’s family extends sincere appreciation to the caring staff of Kennybrook Village and the many family and friends who supported and gave her strength.
