God gave us a beautiful, loving and faithful gift 83 years ago in Ruby G. Ross (McConkey). Ruby went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ September 13, 2017. Family will greet friends and loved ones from 9:30 am to 11:00 am Monday, September 18, 2017 with a Celebration of Life service to follow at 11:00 am at Berean Assembly of God in Pleasant Hill, Ia. Cremation will follow the service.

Born in Peru, Iowa on December 11, 1933, but spent most of her life in and around Adelphi and Woodland Community. Ruby attended the Woodland Community two room school house and graduated from Des Moines Technical High School. She loved her family, music, and people. She dedicated her life to helping people. Her phone message was a mirror of how she lived her life, it said, "Have you thanked God today, if not you should, in everything give thanks." Thesselonians 5:18.

Ruby worked various jobs such as elevator operator for J C Penny downtown, receptionist for Maxheim Studios, and many other receptionist and customer service jobs while raising her family. She served as President of band boosters for Southeast Polk, served as kitchen coordinator at First Assembly of God, she was gifted with a beautiful Soprano singing voice and served the Lord in many choirs, sang for weddings and funerals and special occasions. She retired from Heritage Cable which is now Mediacom as Customer Service Repair Lines Representative.

In 1996 she received a phone call while at work in which the caller told her about an immigrant family from Bosnia that arrived with only two suitcases to start their lives again. Ruby made phone calls and asked her co-workers at the cable company and shared with her church the need for donations of clothing and household items. Money and donations poured in and she was able to provide enough to furnish an apartment for the family of four and enough items left over she moved her car out of the garage and stored the items in her garage. That was the beginnings of Hands of Help, a non-profit organization that helps those who have fallen through the cracks--whether poor families, single parents, the homeless or the unemployed. Through the years it grew into a 2300 sq. ft. warehouse space. Ruby and the non-profit were honored with a $10,000 grant from Wells Fargo in 2005 and honored with the Heroes of the Heartland award in 2006. Countless hundreds of people have been helped with the work done through Hands of Help and the driving force behind it in Ruby. One of her many favorite versus was Proverbs 16:9, "Man's heart plans his way...but God directs his steps." Ruby continued to work with people in need until her passing, and Hands of Help will continue on after her passing.

She is reunited with her family in heaven, Herb and Phylena McConkey, all her siblings, Phyllis West Uhlman, Mary Adams, Betty McConkey, Hervey McConkey, Tommy McConkey and a great-grandson Noah McGinnis.

Survivors include her children Brenda (Larry) McGinnis of Earlham, Ia.; Debra (Lance) Maggard of Des Moines, Ia,; Todd Ross of West Des Moines, Ia,; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to the family.
