Douglas Alan Marshall, 63, died Friday, September 15th, 2017 at Ramsey Village in Des Moines from complications related to early onset dementia. The family will receive friends 5-7 pm Tuesday, September 19th at Iles Westover Chapel in Des Moines. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 20th, 11 am at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines. Interment will be at a later date.

Doug was born May 3rd, 1954 in Greenfield, IA to William and Darlene (Don Carlos) Marshall. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Business from the University of South Dakota, and then moved to Denver, CO for three years. He returned to Greenfield and purchased the family business, Don Carlos Insurance Agency. Doug owned the Insurance Agency for over 30 years, until his illness led him to retirement.

In 1973 Doug met Sheryl Gullickson in Vermillion, SD. The couple married March 10th, 1979 in Freeman, SD. After settling in Iowa, their son, Paul, was born in 1984, and daughter, Chris, in 1985. Doug was instrumental in creating and developing the Youth Soccer Program in Greenfield as well as its integration into a recognized high school team in Greenfield. Doug remained active with the soccer programs until his retirement. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed being outside, gardening and cutting wood for the fireplace.

Survivors include his wife, Sheryl of Urbandale; children: Paul (Katie) Marshall of Windsor Heights, Chris (Josh) Malone of Des Moines; brother, Scott (Connie Steen) Marshall of Greenfield; mother-in-law, MaeBelle Gullickson of Sioux Falls, SD. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Dar Marshall, and father-in-law, Kenneth Gullickson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family. Gifts will later be used to support Staff Development at Ramsey Village and to Lutheran Church of Hope. The family would like to recognize the compassionate and selfless staff of the Memory Care Unit at Ramsey Village. Memorial contributions will be used to support the staff that cared for him so well.
