Ariel Parkinson, 91, of Berkeley, California, died in Des Moines, Iowa, on Monday, October 2, 2017. Survivors include her daughters, Kathy (Herb) Eckhouse of Des Moines; Chrysa (Adam Weig)Parkinson of Stockholm, Sweden; grandchildren Laurel, Sara, and Aaron Eckhouse; nieces, Anne Reynolds and Jill Curran; and godchildren, Flinn Moore Rauck and David Moore. Preceding her were her spouse, Thomas F. Parkinson; her parents Theodore Eric and Laurel Reynolds; and her brother, Gordon Eric Reynolds.
Ariel, a visual artist and member of The Berkeley Renaissance, exhibited her oil paintings, works on paper and theatrical productions across the United States. Ariel was enthralled by the natural world, expressing that passion through art and through political activism. She transmitted her fierce joy and delight in the world to generations of people, many of whom spent seminal periods of their lives with her in Berkeley and at the family property, Guillemot Cove, on Hood Canal in western Washington.
A celebration of life will be held in Berkeley on Dec. 17, 2017.
