Obituary

Robert Vern Dentel, Des Moines was born January 5, 1929 to Emma Johnson Dentel and Carl O. Dentel in Ackley, Iowa. He died October 1, 2017.

Bob was a graduate of Ackley High School and the University of Iowa and enlisted in the U. S. Air Force serving 4 years, the last at a reconnaissance base in Lakenheath, England.

He married Verlyn (Lynn) Weber in 1956 and was employed as an underwriter for Employer's Mutual Insurance; later a stock broker with Conway Brothers in Des Moines. He began his banking career with First Bank of Grantsburg, Wisconsin, followed by Bank of Elroy, Wisconsin.

In 1965 he moved his family to Victor, Iowa where he purchased controlling interest in Victor State Bank. In 1984 they formed Dentel Bancorporation and subsequently purchased First State Bank of Colfax, Maxwell State Bank, Corydon State Bank, Pocahontas State Bank and Panora State Bank. He was Chairman of the Board of all six banks. He enjoyed his customers and was proud to help them succeed in their personal and business endeavors. In 2014 he was recognized by Iowa Bankers Association for 50 years in Iowa Banking.

He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, U of I Alumni Association, National Rifle Association and was Co-chair of Ronald Reagan's presidential campaign in Iowa County.

Bob enjoyed skiing, four wheeling, snowmobiling, reading and hiking, especially the Grand Canyon and Isle Royale National Parks.

He is survived by his sister, Georgia Jean Dentel, Grinnell, his wife Verlyn (Lynn) Dentel, their children Robert (Patricia) Dentel of Victor, Mary (Stephen) Howell of Ames and Kathryn (Henry) Anderson of West Des Moines. Grandchildren include Abbey (Dustin) Deppe, Jonathan and Katie Dentel, James, John and Sarah Howell and Molly, Sophie and Libby Anderson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Thomas Jeffrey Dentel.

Services will be held at Plymouth Church, Des Moines at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 14 with visitation following the service. A private burial will be held at Veterans Cemetery, Van Meter, Iowa.
