Obituary

Dorothy Marie Slemp passed away peacefully at Taylor House Hospice on November 9, 2017 in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 73 years.

Dorothy is survived by loving husband of 55 years, Donald Slemp, her mother, Mary (Ruth) Blacketer, three sons, Daron Slemp (Jackie Blue), Deon Slemp (Linda), Devon Slemp (Angie Langman). Her grandchildren, Kristin Vallad (Mark), Dustin Slemp (Summer), Justin Slemp, Dara Slemp (Kevin Smith), Kyra Slemp (Drew Larkins), Heidi Signs, her great grandchildren, Laney Nash, Miley Nash, Josey Nash, Zaden Slemp, Arianna Corsbie, Emmalyn Corsbie, Zachary Corsbie, her sisters Mildred Shaw (Danny) and Peggy Leap. She is preceded in death by her father Len Blacketer and her sister Barbara Hatcher.

Dorothy was born on February 9, 1944 in Hamburg, Iowa. She married Donald Slemp, her high school sweetheart in June of 1962. She then attended Drake University and graduated in 1973 with a degree in teaching, and working as a math teacher at Valley High School. She enjoyed coaching little league baseball and women’s fast pitched softball for Arrow Signs Company. Dorothy retired in 1998 at the age of 55. She and Don then pursued traveling which they both enjoyed a lot. Dorothy loved to entertain her family and friends with home cooked meals and baked sweet treats. Another one of Dorothy’s passions was watching girls softball and the state tournaments on all levels, especially when her own granddaughters were playing on a team.

Family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday November 17 at Oakwood United Methodist Church with a memorial service on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. , with a reception to follow. Pastor Richard Boltman will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Dorothy’s life. The family would like to thank all the amazing caregivers at the Taylor House Hospice for their loving and tender care of our beloved Dorothy .
