Obituary

Lois Jean Kerr Wheeler, age 95, passed away at Calvin Community on February 12, 2018.
She was borne Oct 6, 1922 to Jessie (Heslop) Kerr and Frank E. Kerr in Des Moines, Iowa. She graduated from Des Moines East High School in 1939 and from Drake University in 1943. She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority, Psi Chi honorary psychology fraternity, acting as president of it her senior year, Zeta Phi Eta professional drama fraternity and many other honorary organizations. She was a member of the Drake Women’s Marching Band and of the Concert Band for two years.
She taught junior and senior high school mathematics at Waukee Consolidated Schools for four years, also acting as Principal the third year. She and Richard A. Wheeler, MD were married June 15, 1947. After a twenty year “leave of absence” to raise her children Lois returned to teaching mathematics at Waukee for nine more years.
Lois was always interested in her children’s education, keeping closely connected to their schools. She served as president of Windsor School and Roosevelt High School PTA’s.
She was a member of chapter HF PEO. She was president of her chapter and also was president of the Des Moines Reciprocity. She worked at the International Office of PEO as collection secretary for the Educational Loan Fund.
She was a member of Windsor Presbyterian Church for many years, serving as trustee, deacon and elder. She was a teacher and leader of youth groups, director of Vacation Bible School and Skipper of Mariners Club. In later years she became a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Lois was a member of the Des Moines Y’smenettes and was active in Family Camp of the Des Moines YMCA camp at Boone for nearly fifty years, serving as mayor in 1962.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents and her brother. Franklin H. Kerr. She is survived by her husband, Richard, four children; Cyndee (Steve) Cox, Michael (Kristi) Wheeler Judi (Michael) McDonough and Jan (Pete) Kitzman, eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Her funeral will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 17th at Dunn’s Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Des Moines Y-Camp at Boone or to the Calvin Community Good Samaritan Fund.
