Sharon Marie Eklund, 59, died Friday, March 9, 2018 in Des Moines, IA. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 17 at Plymouth Church, 4126 Ingersoll Ave., Des Moines, IA.

Sharon was born in Manhattan, KS on January 27, 1959 to Charles and Carol Eklund. She graduated from Shawnee Mission South High School in Overland Park, KS in 1977 and attended the University of Kansas, graduating in 1981 with a degree in Physical Education.

Sharon was a one-of-kind caring person who often hid it behind a tough demeanor. But if you knew her, you knew the truth. She had a big heart and would do anything for anyone. She did not know a stranger, which explains the many friends she has all over the country, and most likely why she was a perfect fit for a career in retail.

After college, Sharon worked for several sporting goods stores in Overland Park and was transferred to Des Moines in mid-1980 to open and manage Herman Sporting Goods at Valley West Mall. She joined Walmart as it opened its first Des Moines-area store in Windsor Heights. She moved to the Jordan Creek Walmart when it was built, and then to the Grimes, IA Walmart when it opened. She worked as a department manager for most of her career, in the vision center, and most recently in accounting at the Grimes store. Sharon retired from Walmart after 28 years in March 2017.

Sharon's early life was filled with softball. Once her knees said no to softball, she thoroughly enjoyed cheering her dogs on as they competed in agility, obedience, rally and conformation shows. Most recently she was the biggest cheerleader for her own and others' dogs in the new dog sport of nose work, and was a great coach, advisor and training partner with her wife Cindy in all dog venues. Sharon also was active in the Border Collie Club of America, serving as RV chair for the annual national specialty for six years. She reveled in welcoming each RV guest and checking on the entire group of campers every day. Over that time, Sharon made many good friends in the Border Collie community from all over the country.

Since her retirement, Sharon had developed a hobby of painting furniture. She discovered she had a real talent for hand-painting whimsical furniture and she was looking forward to a relaxing retirement with a paint brush in one hand and her beloved toy poodle Abby by her side.

Sharon was married to Cindy Eaton-Eklund on July 25, 2009, and they had a beautiful family of fur children. In addition to her wife Cindy, Sharon is survived by her parents, Charles and Carol Eklund, (Bartlesville, OK); her brother Mike Eklund (Derby, KS); sister Vicki Eklund-Keohouhou (Andover, KS); four nieces and nephews; and Zak, Chloe, Secret, Macy and Abby.

She was preceded in death by her baby brother Charles Edward (Eddie) Eklund, her uncle John Ewbank, and her beloved grandmother Madeline Pinckney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sharon Eklund Benefit in care of any Veridian Credit Union.
