Obituary

Harry James Berry, 87, of Madrid, passed away Saturday, April 14, 2018, at his home in Madrid.

Harry was born July 31, 1930, in Madrid, son of James and Hazel (Gregg) Berry. He received his education in Madrid and was a member of the class of 1949. He married Beatrice Joan Lumsdon on May 29, 1948 and they made their home and raised their family in the Madrid area. Harry worked at Firestone in Des Moines for 34 years, retiring on his birthday in 1982. Harry also farmed in the Madrid area.

In 1982 Harry and Joan moved to Branson, MO where they both worked for Silver Dollar City. In 1989 they relocated to Tucson, AZ and Harry worked overnight security for an area car dealership. After Joan’s passing in 2004 he continued to live in Tucson, returning to Madrid in 2007.

Harry attended the Hopkins Grove United Methodist Church and St. Paul’s United Church of Christ. He enjoyed watching NCIS and football on TV, woodworking, projects around the home, riding his pink girls bike around town, baking cookies, making noodles, and spending time socializing at congregate meals.

Harry always had a great sense of humor and on any given day if you asked him how he was doing he would reply with, “Grumpy - that’s my stock answer and I’m sticking to it!” This earned him the nickname “Grumpy” from his family and those that knew him in the community.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents, wife Joan and a brother Glen.

He is survived by five children; Paul (Pat) Berry of Urbandale, IA, David (Georgette) Berry and Alan (Brenda) Berry both of Tucson, AZ, Carl (Kimberly) Berry of Portsmouth, VA and Joyce Christianson of Madrid, nine grandchildren; Tony Berry, Danielle (Jon) Hofer, Scott Berry, Sarah (Robert) Brunney, Rob (Kara Husen) Hatch, Mia (Jason Echo) (Berry) Olsen, Nicole (Berry) Dela Rosa, Amy Berry and Nathan (Kendal Hobbs) Christianson, as well as 16 great-grandchildren.

A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, April 20, 2018 from 4-6 p.m. at the Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Madrid with Masonic and Eastern Star services following. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Madrid.
