Alan Lee Rohlwing, of Des Moines, 70, passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2021 after a short battle with cancer.

Al was born June 19, 1951 in Charles City, Iowa to Lavola (Swick) and Wayne Rohlwing. Al grew up in Clarksville, Iowa and was the oldest of four children. His favorite childhood memories included being a Boy Scout, playing baseball, watching westerns, following the space race, and playing trumpet in his band, The Matadors.

Al graduated from Clarksville High School in 1969 and enrolled in Iowa State University with aspirations of becoming an astronaut. In the end, he followed his love for the arts, pursuing the study of graphic design. Throughout his long and successful career in Des Moines, Al contributed to numerous local logos, signs, brochures, and magazines, many of which are still in use today. For many years, he was Art Director of the Iowa Tourism Guide, which won ‘best in the nation.’ In 2008, he retired, spending his time working with his son, Ian, going on daily walks, and shooting hoops.

Throughout his life, Al followed his love for art, fantasy literature, history, Iowa State athletics, movies, politics, and music, particularly The Beatles and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Al was also a member of the YMCA and a dedicated blood donor with LifeServe of Iowa.

More than anything, Al loved his two sets of twins: Alex and Ian, and Ivy (Matt) Rohlwing Cooper, and Zach (Alison). He raised his kids in Beaverdale with their mother, Ellen Jorgensen. Al is also survived by his mother, Lavola (Swick) Rohlwing; siblings, Paul (Jill) Rohlwing, Becky (Hank) Vasey, Lori (Chris) Rohlwing; and one grandchild, Felix Rohlwing-Brown. He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne Rohlwing.

Contributions may be made to GiGi’s Playhouse, the Iowa State University Foundation, and to the family. A private celebration of life will be held among family and friends at the end of July.
