Alberta Barrett, 84, passed away Saturday, February 19, 2011 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston after a lengthy battle against Alzheimer's. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 23 at Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Granger with burial to follow at Lincoln Cemetery.

Visitation begins 5 p.m. Tuesday at Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Granger where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

Alberta was born in Runnells, Iowa to Guy and Irene (Curry) Van Horn. She was united in marriage to Robert "Bob" Barrett in Prairie City, and they have spent a loving and supportive 64 years together. They started farming in Altoona before moving to Granger 55 years ago.

Alberta is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband, Bob; children, Linda Clark of Dallas, Texas, Bruce (Diane) Barrett of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Brent (Cathy) Barrett of Granger; her grandchildren, Blake and Brooke Barrett; sister, Virginia (Lloyd) Menard of Lakewood, Colorado; sister-in-law, Vivian (Merlin) Brubaker of Bettendorf; and several nieces and nephews.

Alberta was an active member of the First Christian Church of Granger where she taught Sunday School and participated in Christian Women's Fellowship Group. She cared for her mother and mother-in-law for 13 years while they were living at the Granger Manor. After their deaths she continued to serve the Granger Manor, giving devotions and offering comfort to numerous residents.

She had a smile to share with everyone she met and faced life's challenges and declining health by relying on her deep Christian faith, a wonderful sense of humor and unyielding optimism that inspired us all.

The family is grateful to the wonderful caregivers at Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center who have lovingly cared for Alberta the past four years and to the loving staff at Mercy Hospice in Johnston who provided compassion and care that touched our hearts.

Memorial contributions may be made to Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Granger.
