Obituary

Alice E. Ward, 85, wife of the late Rev. L. Hume Ward, passed away at Kavanagh House from a third bout of cancer on Monday, November 29, 2010, with her daughters, Laura and Lin, at her side. A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 2 at Windsor Presbyterian Church in Windsor Heights.

The fifth and youngest child of missionaries to Mexico, Alice grew up in Kansas, worked in a military factor during WWII, and was graduated from Huron College, SD, in 1945. Alice attended McCormick Seminary in Chicago, departing a year early to marry Hume in 1947. She taught English and directed high school plays in North Dakota before migrating south to the various churches her husband served in South Dakota, and then Windsor Heights, where they found their true home. Alice shared her love of learning with students as a guidance counselor at several Des Moines schools including, Harding, Goodrell, Hoyt and Brody.

An avid reader and traveler, Alice was interested in everyone and enthusiastic about everything she pursued. She laughed easily and loved fully, and having her attention turned to you, felt like basking in sunlight. After retirement, Alice became passionate about cruising, which satisfied her love of water and great food, and her dislike of packing and unpacking. We like to picture her now on a second honeymoon with Hume, cruising to all of the most beautiful places in Heaven. We love you, and miss you, Mama and Dad.

Alice was an active member of Windsor Presbyterian for 30 years, and more recently, Westminster Presbyterian. Donations may be sent to either church.
