Obituary

Born June 24, 1907, to Edla and Hans Anderson, Alice lived a very long and full life which ended peacefully November 8, 2009, in Des Moines. She is survived by sister, Margaret White of Des Moines, while sister, Gladys Skinner, and brother, Clarence Anderson went before. Several nieces, nephews and cousins survive as well.

The eldest child of Swedish immigrants, Alice was raised in the tiny Wisconsin mining town of Iron Belt. She received her education in home economics from Wisconsin State Teachers' College at Stevens Point. After graduation, Alice set off to New York, where she met her beloved husband of 66 years, Harry R Hartman (d. 1999.)

Harry's career allowed them to live and travel throughout North America, Europe and the Middle East, enjoying a life of personal and cultural growth. Wherever they lived, Alice created a welcoming place for friends to gather, enjoy a meal, a round of bridge, and perhaps a song or two as she played the organ. Alice shared her far-away world with family through beautifully written letters, postcards and unique gifts.

Intelligent, outspoken and assertive, Alice kept up with politics, current events and golf (an avid player herself.) She was particularly fond of Presidents Eisenhower and Obama, calling the latter "the real deal." She would proudly say: "I've still got my buttons" (mind) even after more than 100 years.

Alice embodied the times she lived through: The adventurousness of a small town girl in New York during the Roaring 20's; a frugal, serious teacher and homemaker during the Depression; cosmopolitan and sophisticated in the post-war era and gracious, and sociable in retirement. She leaves a small, loving family and treasured friends on two continents, all of whom will never forget her.

No services are planned. Her life is her memorial.
