Resided in Johnston, IA

Andrew Ernest Giehl of Des Moines died March 6, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center following a short illness.
Born October 14, 1955, Andy was a lifelong resident of Des Moines. He attended Ruby Van Meter School. Andy began receiving vocational services from Link Associates at the age of 22. Over the past 15 years, Andy has lived independently in group homes and attended training and work activities. Most recently, he lived with a roommate, Tom Hughes, at Chapel Ridge apartment complex in Johnston. He worked on an enclave that cleaned the Des Moines Park restroom facilities and one where he washed pots and pans in the deli area at Hy Vee.

Andy was a friend to everyone and especially loved children. He was always willing to help people any way he could. He enjoyed collecting pop tabs to donate to the Ronald McDonald House, and he never missed the opportunity to pick up someone's soda can for that purpose. He also collected the pop cans for redemption. He enjoyed spending time with his staff and friends at the group home and with family. He will be remembered for his warm greeting of hi and a hand shake to everyone he met. Every time Andy greeted a friend, he would ask about their family and how they were doing. He never forgot anyone.
Andy is survived by his mother and father, Geraldine and Francis Giehl; three brothers, Paul, Greg and Dennis Giehl; one sister, Rose Ellen Bloom; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in
death by a sister, Maureen, and a brother, Charlie.
