Andris Kirsis, 83, died Thursday, November 11, 2010 at Kavanagh House Hospice in Des Moines. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, November 15 at St. Theresa Catholic Church of which he was a long-time member. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery.

Andy was born in Riga, Latvia on July 6, 1927 and immigrated to Des Moines in 1950. He worked for 31 years as a tire builder and press operator for Armstrong Tire and Rubber Company retiring in 1989. He was conscripted into the Latvian Army during World War II and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War era. He was a member of the Latvian Society of Iowa and the Latvian Veterans Welfare Association “Daugavas Vanagi.” He enjoyed outdoor activities including hunting, fishing and firearm sports.

Andy was preceded in death in 1992 by his wife of 42 years, Emma (Dukulis) Kirsis and in 1982 by his daughter, Kunigunda “Connie” Kirsis. He is survived by his son, Andris Kirsis, DDS; daughter-in-law, Theresa Kirsis and grandson, Andris Kirsis II, all of Des Moines.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Iles Funeral Homes-Dunn’s Chapel where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday. Memorial Contributions may be directed to the Latvian Society in Iowa or the Latvian Veterans Welfare Association “Daugavas Vanagi.”
