Andy Phillips Obituary

Andrew Alvin Phillips, age 58, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on May 23, 2025 from sudden heart failure.

Andy was born in Des Moines, Iowa, son of Alvin and Betty Phillips and lived here most of his life. He married Lori Bates in 1985 and was a devoted father to his son AJ, and his daughter, Christine. He loved nothing more than spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Andy graduated from Hoover High School in Des Moines. He began working at the Des Moines Register and Tribune in 1983. What began as a paper route turned into 40 years as a machinist. He loved telling people that he was the “chief button pusher”. Andy continued with every shift and often overtime, through his tiring dialysis appointments. He worked hard, rarely complained and faced it all with strength and dignity. His ability to make people laugh and feel loved was one of his best qualities. He will be missed by his family, many friends and co workers.

Andy is survived by his parents, Alvin and Betty Phillips; his son AJ (KJ) Phillips; his daughter Christine Norris; grandchildren Dillon (Elizabeth) Norris, Alaura, and Darla; his sister Audra (Rick) Nelson, and many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lori Phillips.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 3rd from 4-6 pm at Iles-Dunn's Chapel located at 2121 Grand Ave in Des Moines.

There will be a celebration of life to be held at a later date.
