Helen Anne Kennedy Hovey, 1921-2012, died on Thursday April, 26, 2012, at Kavanagh House, 56th St. in Des Moines. She was born to Carl Nelson and Mae Irvine Kennedy, both graduates of Iowa State, and she graduated from Iowa State with a major in home economics with applied arts and lived most of her adult life in Iowa. She gave birth to two daughters with her first husband, Robert Litchfield, and two sons with her second husband, Robert Hovey. Before her marriage to Robert Hovey, she owned and operated a photography studio in Atlantic, Iowa, and was known for the award winning photographs she produced.

Anne maintained her artistic joy throughout her life. She enjoyed "the discovery of change" and tried "to remember the color, shapes, and feeling of the land." Her usual method was to take her camera with her on her travels and then use her photographs as the basis for painting ideas. With a background in professional photography from many years in her own studio and two merits shy of being a "master photographer," Anne had an excellent eye for the visual uniqueness of nature. She preferred to create an impressionistic rendering of what her mind and her eye created together. She believed that her paintings "should be a poem for me to create, and it should give the viewer a feeling and not be just a pretty picture."

Anne exhibited numerous times in the Iowa Artists Show, the Iowa State Fair, the Iowa Watercolor Society, and others. She was a signature member of the Iowa Watercolor Society, and has been honored with awards for her paintings in each of the above.

Anne graduated with a B.S. from Iowa State University in 1946. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority, Delta Phi Delta Art Honorary, and Omicron Nu Home Economics Honorary. She taught art at Ames Junior High School in 1946, and West Des Moines Valley High School in 1962-1963. Anne studied drawing at Drake University with Ada Medina; etching at Des Moines Art Center with Amy Worthen; serigraph at Parsons College with Glen Washburn; painting at Des Moines Art Center with Robert Friemark, Jules Kirchenbaum, Cornelius Ruthenburg, Michael Foran, Jimmy Ernst, Henry Varnum Poor, Stephen Green, and Mary Muller. She took watercolor workshops under Jeanne Dobie, AWS, Margaret Martin, AWS, Cheng-Khee Chee, AWS, MWS, Barbara Nechis, and Jan Fabian Wallake. Anne exhibited her work in many juried shows numerous times.

A member of PEO, JJ Chapter, and Central Presbyterian Church in Des Moines, Anne lived at Scottish Rite Park, 29th and Woodland, Des Moines, since the late 1990's after her husband, Robert, died. She considered raising her four children, two girls and two boys, as one of her most important accomplishments. All four children and their children have benefited from Anne's artistic sense and values. She is survived by Anne Litchfield Perry and her husband, Frank from Texas, Julie Litchfield Tallman from Georgia, John Robert Hovey and his wife, Christine from Adel, and James Kennedy Hovey from Florida. She has eight grandchildren, Tad Perry and Kris Perry Kennedy from Texas; Kelly Tallman Clements from Virginia and Jennifer Tallman Bass from South Carolina; Amanda Hovey from Des Moines and Meredith Hovey from England; Paul Hovey from Ames and Sarah Hovey from Florida. She is also survived by ten great-grandchildren and treasured friends from near and far.

Anne requested that flowers not be sent.
