Obituary

Arlen M. Hardisty, 76, died Tuesday, January 27, 2004 at Kavanagh House on 56th Street in Des Moines. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, January 31 at Westover Funeral Home with burial in Glendale Cemetery.

Arlen was born in Greenfield, IA and grew up in Council Bluffs, where he graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School. He was a US Navy Air Corps veteran of WWII and married Marjorie J. McArdle in 1947. Arlen graduated from Drake University in Des Moines, where he and Marjorie resided for 35 years. They also lived in Napervile, IL, and Somerville, NJ, before moving to Grimes a year ago.

Arlen had worked for the telephone company for 40 years, 25 of those years with Northwestern Bell. He retired in 1984 from Bellcore of New Jersey as National Liaison Manager of the Right of Way Division. Arlen was a member of National Right of Way in New Jersey, the Lions Club in Urbandale and Computer Club in Ankeny. He enjoyed working on the computer and also repaired talking book machines for the blind.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie J. Hardisty; daughter, Cynthia E. Sandahl (Craig B.) of Johnston and grandson, Eric W. Sandahl; sister, Beverly Jensen of Lincoln, NE; stepgranddaughter, Stescey Gaffney (Brad) of Des Moines; stepgrandson, Conrad Sandahl (Sarah) of Minneapolis, MN; three stepgreat-grandchildren; two nieces, Stacy (Brian) James of Lincoln, NE, and Gina (John) Novotny of Greenwood, IN; three great-nieces; and three great-nephews.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
