Arthur Robert "Art" Strauss, Jr., 87, passed from this life on Friday, May 13, 2011 at Kavanagh House in Des Moines. In agreement with Arthur's wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service celebrating Arthur's life will be held at 2:30 p.m., on Friday, June 24, at Iles Funeral Homes – Westover Chapel in Des Moines. Private committal services will take place at a later date.

Arthur was born the son of Arthur Robert and Anna Logan Strauss on January 17, 1924 in New York City, New York. Art was a World War II veteran. He entered the Army Air Corps at the age of 17 and served in London, England for two years. In 1944, he married Lucille Locher in Bellville, IL, and their marriage was blessed with three children. They lived in Peoria, IL until 1963 when they moved to the Quad Cities. In 1980, Art and Lou moved to Clive where they resided until their passing.

Art had a 30 year long career in the grocery business, having worked with Kroger's and National Tea grocery chains as store and district manager. In 1972 Art made a career change to to the Ardan retail chain where is held the position of vice president of operations and later became president of Naum Bros. (a subsidiary of Ardan's). In 1984 he joined Commtron Corp. in Des Moines as a senior executive of store operations and eventually retired in 1993.

Art enjoyed woodworking and was a master of his craft. Always the automobile enthusiast, Art also enjoyed and owned some of the sportiest and stylish of cars. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Des Moines.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his three children, Bob (Renee) Strauss of Brookfield, WI, Debbie (Larry) Heglar of Huntington Harbor, CA and John A. (Linda) Strauss of Tustin, CA; and six grandchildren, Kevin (Laurel) and Ryan Strauss, Ashley and Tori Heglar and Matthew and Michael Strauss. Arthur was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of more than 65 years in June 2010, Lucille, and his sister June.
