Benjamin Gordon Keyte, 93, died Thursday, May 10, 2007 at his home in Wesley Acres in Des Moines.

Visitation will be held between 12:00 and 2:00 PM, and the funeral service to follow at 2:00 PM, Monday, May 14th, both at Plymouth Congregational Church in Des Moines. Burial will be in Sheldahl Cemetery, Sheldahl, Iowa.

Gordon was born to Benjamin and Ethel Ashby Keyte, 1913, in Johnston, Iowa. He attended Simpson College, and later, The Cumming School of Art in Des Moines, where he became an instructor. In 1942 he married fellow artist, Merrenda Sheldahl.

During WWII he spent four years in the Army Air Corps at duty stations throughout the United States.

A life-long resident of the Des Moines area, Gordon was well known as an artist and art instructor. For many years he was a graphic arts evaluator for the Iowa State Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. He served with distinction on the board of directors of the National Rehabilitation Association and as national president of the Vocational Evaluation and Work Adjustment Association.

Gordon was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church, the Iowa Art Guild, the Osmund and Anna Sheldahl Memorial Society; and he was charter member of the Art Directors Association of Iowa.

In his last eleven years he resided at Wesley Acres where he actively served his new community in numerous capacities.

Gordon was a tireless advocate for and devotee of all the arts, committed to arts education for all students.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers, Russell and Donald, sisters, Edith and Helen and son, Paul. He is survived by his brother, Kenneth (Ada Lee), daughters, Barbara Chaney and Susan (Kerry) Shore, son, Christopher (Beth), grandsons, Willliam (Mary) Chaney and Lewis Keyte, granddaughters, Sarah and Jennifer Shore, Anna (Olivier Fedrigo), Emily, Melinda and Laura Keyte, and great-grandchildren, Robert, Nathanael, Benjamin, John, Joseph and Madeline Chaney.
