Betty Ann Volm, 85, died Tuesday, March 17, 2015, at the Taylor House after a short illness. Funeral services will be held 9:30 a.m. Friday, March 20, at Valley United Methodist Church in West Des Moines. Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Moline Memorial Park in Moline, IL.

Betty was born September 13, 1929, in Moline, IL, the daughter of Ernest and Stella Miller. She was the youngest of three siblings. Her two brothers were Bob and George. Betty graduated from Moline High School and the University of Illinois, where she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. She received an MA in Communications from Sangamon State University in Springfield, IL and in 1974 she received her pilot's license.

Betty married Bob Sands on July 1, 1951, and later married Don Volm of Des Moines. She was a member of Valley United Methodist Church in West Des Moines and most recently was a resident of Scottish Rite Park in Des Moines. Betty was employed by the Iowa Board of Regents until her retirement. She enjoyed photography and gardening and was awarded the designation of Master Gardener. Betty was a member of The Friendship Force of Des Moines, and visited several countries. She was a past president of the Beaverdale Neighborhood Association and a city council appointee to the Neighborhood Advisory Board. Betty, a loving inspiration to her children and grandchildren, was an animal lover, world-traveler and avid sports fan.

Betty is survived by her children, Laura (David Busiek) Sands, Rebecca (Alan) Hinsey, Robert (Allison Greene-Sands) Greene Sands, Stasia Kahn, Eric (Patty) Sands and Steve (Angie) Sands; grandchildren, Maggi Blue, Abigail Johnson, Anastasia Busiek, Parker Sands, Ben Busiek, Julia Busiek, Andrea Sands, Rachel Kahn, Nick Sands, Alex Kahn, Elise Kahn, and Sydney Sands; great-grandchildren, Atticus Blue and Lucy Johnson; step-children, Matt Volm, Tim Volm, Ann Braverman, and Nick Volm; step grandchildren, Ben Stolley, Emily Braverman, and Will Braverman, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and two husbands.

The family will receive friends from 5 – 7 p.m. Thursday at Iles-Westover Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Doctors Without Borders or Valley United Methodist Church.
