Obituary

Elizabeth (Betty) Derrick, 92, passed away Monday, March 23, 2009 at Fleur Heights Care Center. Her memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday March 25, 2009, at Dunn's Funeral Home, 2121 Grand Ave., Des Moines. A luncheon gathering for family and friends will take place in the Party Room at The Ingersoll Towers, 3662 Ingersoll Ave., Des Moines where Betty lived since 1973.

Betty was born February 18, 1917, in Detroit, Michigan, to Robert H. and June E. Miller. She lived most of her life in Des Moines, where she moved with her family from Kansas City in 1926. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1935, and attended both Drake University and The University of Iowa.

She was married to Dale Derrick June 3, 1939, until his death in 1960.

Betty was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church, Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, and The Des Moines Club. She was a leader for both the Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts, a reader for Wesley Acres residents, and volunteered at Plymouth Church. During her working years, she was employed by Bankers Life Insurance Company, Lull Artists and Designers, Clarence Marco and Company, The Book Store, and The Enchanted Cottage, from which she retired in 1994. Betty also enjoyed cooking, entertaining and traveling; including trips to Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, Canada, and numerous sites in the United States. She loved reading and doing needlepoint, and especially loved getting together with family and friends. She will be missed.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and her brother, Robert H. Miller Jr. She is survived by her children; Sue Irish of Des Moines, James A. Derrick of Alexandria, VA, Thomas Derrick (Deborah) of Omaha; and her grandchildren Janet Somerville (James) of Phoenix, AZ, Michael Irish of Shizuoka, Japan, Scott Irish (Maxine) of Indianola, Kristina Derrick and Jonathan Derrick, both of Omaha.

Memorials may be made to The Animal Rescue League of Iowa, The Des Moines Public Library Foundation, or Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa.
