Betty, daughter of John Ollinger and Katherine (Pitsch) Ollinger, was born on December 18, 1930 in Marengo, IA. She grew up on the family farm near Ladora with her four brothers and graduated from Marengo High School in 1947. After graduation, she moved to Des Moines to work at Meredith, and shortly thereafter met her future husband at the Iowa State Fair. On November 28, 1953 in Williamsburg, IA, Betty was joined in marriage to James V. Rash, her loving spouse of 61 years.

Family always came first for Betty. She was a devoted mom and proud grandmother who always supported her kids. She slept with one eye open and knew by the creaks in the floor which kid was sick in the night. She never missed a concert or athletic event if her children were involved. Betty was an excellent gardener, with tomatoes in the back yard every summer and colorful flowers all around the house. She was a talented cook, legendary for her stuffed green peppers, rhubarb pie, and gingersnaps. She was also a world traveler, enjoying multiple trips with her husband Jim and their Europe Group.

Betty was energized by work, both at home and outside. She kept her home spotless and rarely sat down unless there was a good game on TV. She enjoyed working at Northwestern Bell and later AT&T as a telephone operator and trainer. After her retirement from AT&T, she took a job as a receptionist at Calvin Manor, where she formed friendships with many of the residents who sought her out and enjoyed her company.

Survivors include Betty’s children: Vern Rash of Altoona, Gayla (Don) Winslow of Rochester, MN, Mike Rash of Des Moines, Andrea (Harv) Vij of West Des Moines; grandchildren: Michelle Rash, Emily Rash, Stephanie Rash, Alyssa (Scott) Ross, Nolan Winslow, Paige Winslow, Libbey (Peter) Schmitt, Lauren Rash, Alec Rash and AJ Vij; and great grandchildren: Liam Schmitt, Oliver Duncan and Samuel Ross. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, James Rash, her daughter, Audrey Marie Rash, and her brothers, Howard Ollinger, Evard Ollinger, Bernard Ollinger, and Keith Ollinger.
