Betty Jo "B. Jo" Brittain, 86, died peacefully surrounded by her family on October 23, 2009, at Urbandale Health Care Center. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, October 26, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church, 1001 Pleasant Street, Des Moines, 50309. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, October 25, 2009, at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines, Iowa.

B. Jo was born, June 7, 1923, in Jefferson, Iowa to LeRoy and Nathalia Louise (Metzger) Shockey. She spent her childhood in Jefferson, then moved to Grand Junction, Iowa, where she graduated from high school in 1941.

After graduation, B. Jo moved to Des Moines and began working at the Armory, then Bankers Life. She became a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Eta Beta Phi Sorority. She married Donald Keith Brittain June 15, 1947, and had three children. She had a successful career with Avon and worked until her retirement at American Republic Insurance Company.

B. Jo had many interest over the years, cooking, baking, decorating wedding cakes, embroidery, gardening, singing in the church choir, playing bridge, square and round dancing, painting, fishing and boating and most of all she loved to share time with her family and friends.

She will be missed by her son, Donald "Kim" and wife, Teresa of Des Moines; her twin daughters, Kathy Jo Reineke and husband, Dave of Mahomet, IL and Kerry Jo Rivera of Des Moines; her grandchildren, Kellie, Terry Lee, Kyla, Kari, Jeff, Kathleen and Liza and 8 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don in 1994 and her parents and sister, Lois James.

Memorial donations in her name may be made to the First United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer's Association.
