Obituary

Beverly Jean Bobb, 90, passed away on February 10, 2019. Beverly, a lifelong resident of Des Moines, Iowa, was born on December 2, 1928, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Mike and Irene Masters. She was the youngest of her family, and had 2 older brothers, Donald and Edward.

On February 15, 1948, she was united in marriage to Samuel G. Bobb, of Chicago, Illinois. They met while Sam was attending Drake University. Their son, AJ, was born in March of 1949, daughter, Lorna was born July of 1953. They had a happy family life.

Starting small, they created a business, Bobb Office Supply, located on the east side of downtown Des Moines. Beverly was the president of this company, managed the books, and was integral in the success it achieved. She was a careful bookkeeper and was never far from her adding machine for the rest of her life. She maintained her finances completely until her health started failing at age 89. Bobb Office Supply was sold in 1984, and Sam and Beverly retired.

Sam and Beverly were truly partners, in every sense of the word. They not only built the business together but enjoyed attending auctions all over Iowa in their off-hours, collecting rare antiques to fill their home. When their home was full, Beverly started an antique business in addition to the office supply business. It was a success, but the main problem was Bev’s inability to sell the rare antiques she had found and loved the most.

Beverly’s ancestors had been among the group who founded Beth El Jacob Synagogue, and she maintained a lifelong connection with that congregation. She and Sam were supportive of the whole Jewish community of Des Moines, and had friends in all three synagogues, as well as Jewish communities in other parts of the state. Their Judaism was a very important part of their lives.

Beverly is survived by her son AJ (Barbara), daughter Lorna (Bob) Helgeland, granddaughter Bridgette Bobb, and grandson Skyler Schweers.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Animal Rescue League.
