Bill H. Hawkins, 65, passed away from cancer July 14, 2005 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. August 4, 2005 at Plymouth Congregational Church, 4126 Ingersoll Avenue, Des Moines. The cremains will be buried at the church’s Memorial Gardens in a private family ceremony.
Bill was a kind and loving husband, a wonderful father and good friend to many people. His easy smile, wit, insight and caring will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Bill was born August 4, 1939 in Maud, OK to Shelby and Letha Hawkins. His family lived in Kansas during his younger years; he graduated from Hoisington High School in 1957, and from Wichita Technical Institute in 1959. In 1961 he began working for IBM Corporation in Wichita, KS. His long and rewarding career with IBM moved him to Dodge City, KS; Poughkeepsie, NY; Des Moines, IA and Burlington, IA. He held positions as a Customer Engineer, Technical Writer, System Engineer and Marketing Representative. Bill received many honors while employed by IBM including being named President of the IBM Club while in New York. Following his departure from IBM in 1986, he worked for several IBM Business Partner companies until 1995 when he became self-employed.
On August 10, 1990 he married Marta Noel (Doyle) in Des Moines. Bill and Marta loved to travel and visited many wonderful sites during their short time together. Bill collected pictures of State Capitols and their travel plans often centered around adding to the collection. In addition, Bill enjoyed bicycle riding and rode on RAGBRAI for many years with his son Charles; coached girl’s softball for daughters Dina and Kandi and baseball for son Charles; and enjoyed baseball and track and field events (especially the Drake Relays).
Bill’s parents preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Marta; daughters, Dina
(Randy) Remington, West Des Moines and Kandi (Kevin) Barber, Coralville, IA; son Charles (Melissa), Houston, TX; and stepson Shay Noel, Des Moines. Also surviving is his sister, Sue (Dick) Campbell, Hoisington, KS and eight grandchildren: Alicia and Eric Quinn, Kailey, Jordan and Jacob Barber, Mason Remington and Eliot and Xander Hawkins.
Memorial gifts may be made to Mercy Hospice or AIB College of Business for a scholarship fund established in Bill’s name. No flowers please.
