Bowen Campbell, Jr.
February 17, 1940 – September 5, 2014

Bo was a lifelong resident of Des Moines. He was born to Maxine and Bowen Campbell, the third of three sons. He attended Stowe, Park Avenue, Lincoln Junior/Senior High School, and the University of Iowa. As a Railsplitter, Bo was a member of the varsity swim, baseball, and golf teams.

In 1958, Bo became a Hawkeye at Iowa City, joining the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. At the U of I, Bo graduated from the College of Dentistry in 1965. He was a member of the Delta Sigma Delta dental fraternity. Dr. Campbell's dental career took him into the Navy and private practice at Ingersoll Dental. He was a dedicated member of the dental community, continuing his education as a member of the dental G.B. Black Study Club.

Bo married Jan Deckard in 1962. The couple celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary. Jan and Bo have two children: Bowen Campbell, III and Lauren have three children, Hudson, Stella and Clara. Sara Campbell Gaskell and Jon Gaskell have two children, Sally and Jack. Bo is survived by his brothers Crom (Mary) Campbell and Robert Campbell and many nieces and nephews.

Dr. Campbell achieved the rank of Captain in the Naval Reserve. He served active duty in California; the Philippines; Japan; and Viet Nam. His active duty was abroad the USS Isle Royale, a Navy tender.

Bo loved sports and sports cars. He enjoyed sailing, hunting, skiing, fishing, golf, tennis, running, marksmanship, canoeing, camping, hiking, and biking. The Campbell family have been members of Plymouth Congregational Church for generations. Community involvement was important in Bo's life. He was president of Reciprocity Club and served on other boards.

Bo possessed a rare sense of humor and infectious laugh. He brought joy and fun to all of his many groups of friends and family. A heartfelt "thank you" goes to the many visitors, well wishers, family, care givers, Dr. Sean Cunningham and staff members at Unity Point at Home.

Hannah is the last of Bo's cherished hunting dogs. A sign hangs in Bo's home, "Heaven's the place where all the dogs you've ever loved come to greet you."

There will be a private family memorial. For anyone wishing to make a donation in Bo's memory, in lieu of flowers, the family would encourage you to consider the following charities: Animal Rescue League, 5452 NE 22nd DSM, 50313; Alzheimer's Association 1130 28th Street.
