Obituary

Bradley Stephen Carey, age 69, died Saturday, February 18, 2023, after a courageous battle with leukemia. Brad was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at Iles Westover Funeral Home in Des Moines, Iowa at 11:15 a.m. followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Iles Westover Funeral Home preceding the services, beginning at 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on March 21, 2023.

Brad was born March 22, 1953, in Des Moines, Iowa the son of Mary (Sally) Gardner and James Carey. He grew up in Maxwell, Iowa and graduated from Maxwell Community High School in 1971. Brad was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Mount on May 8, 1976, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Des Moines. The two were lifelong companions and were blessed with two children, Elizabeth and Michael.

Brad worked for most of his adult life in the restaurant industry. Brad and Mary fulfilled a dream of theirs and opened a restaurant together, Carey’s Capitol City Cafe, in downtown Des Moines during the 1990s. Their cafe was a labor of love and a true family business, many of their regular customers and distributors remain friends to this day. Brad retired from Waterfront Seafood Market, shortly before moving with Mary to Apache Junction, Arizona in 2020.

Brad was a wonderful father and caring grandfather. He was an avid reader and was passionate about wildlife (particularly bald eagles) and astronomy. Brad was a devoted sports fan. He loved watching NASCAR, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and the Kansas City Chiefs. Brad was always eager to share his interests with others, inviting friends and family to view the Decorah eagle cameras or catch a glimpse of the latest meteor shower.

Brad is survived by his wife Mary; his children, Elizabeth Song (Sammy) of Gilbert, Arizona and Michael Carey (Jo-Anne) of Des Moines, Iowa; his four grandchildren, Jack, William and Benjamin Song and Joshua Carey. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers David, Brian and Marshall Carey.

The family would like to express a sincere thank you to the devoted staff at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona who provided Brad with such exceptional and loving care.
