Obituary

Bruce E. Longstreet, 84, passed from this life on Friday, Oct. 2, 2009 at Kavanagh House in Des Moines after a short illness. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel in Des Moines. Burial will follow at the Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines.

Born the son of Porter A. and Refah (Schlegel) Longstreet on Jan. 17, 1925 in New Sharon, IA. He was a graduate from New Sharon High School and Central College in Pella, IA. Bruce served in the army and was a POW in Germany during WWII, honorably discharged in 1945. He was awarded both the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his services.

Bruce was married over 52 years to Gloria M. Longstreet and having one son, Scott. He was an owner-partner with American Abstract Co. for 37 years, retiring in 1989. Active in teaching WWII history, he strived to promote recognition of those who served. He was on the Board of Directors for the Gold Star Museum and a committee member for the WWII Memorial. Bruce was a member of First Federated Church.

He is survived by his son, Scott Longstreet and wife Juli of Urbandale, one sister, Jane Coffey of Galva IL, two granddaughters, Kelsey Hunsberger and husband John of Johnston and Abbey Longstreet of Urbandale. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Gloria.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 pm Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to First Federated Church of Des Moines.
