Carmelia "Malena" Formaro, 97, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at home. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, August 3, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Ambrose Cathedral with burial being held at 12:30 p.m. in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter.

Malena was born on July 11, 1912 in Utica New York, the daughter of Vincent and Philamena (Sasson) Fusaro. The family lived in seven states before settling in Iowa.

Malena held numerous positions in her lifetime working for Northwestern Bell, Helen & Pat's Restaurant, as a receptionist at H&R Block and as a hostess at Ramada Inn. Malena and her husband, Gordon operated the Saylorville Dairy Sweet for many years. Malena was known for her love of family, friends, Italian cooking and dancing. She truly will be missed.

Malena is survived by her husband, Gordon whom she married on July 4, 1951; three daughters, Susanna Formaro and Nancy Formaro, both of California, and Rosanne (Jim) Chandlee of Virginia; two grandsons, Mark (Liz) Chandlee and Steve (Lydia) Chandlee; six great grandchildren, Ryan, Joseph, Adam, Vincent, Magdalena and Luke; sisters, Jenny Arland of New Mexico and Tilli Ivanovich of Des Moines and many many friends and relatives. She is preceded in death by three brothers, Joe, Pat and Frank and two sisters, Sue Essy and Rose Stilwell.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 2, 2009 at Iles Funeral Homes ~ Grandview Park Chapel from 2-6 p.m. with a Vigil service starting at 2 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to her church, St. Ambrose Cathedral Catholic Church.
