Carmen Jean Leahy, slipped the bonds of earth and entered eternal heaven on April 11, 2009, while resting peacefully at Mercy Hospice, Johnston, Ia.

Carmen was born in Des Moines, on February 28, 1939 to Minnie and Michael Sam Tursi. She graduated from St. Anthony Grade School, St. Joseph Academy and Drake University where she received her degree in Elementary Education. Carmen taught Kindergarten and First Grade in the Des Moines Public School District and Religious Education at St. Augustin's Parish.

On September 10, 1960 Carmen and Tom Leahy were married. They were blessed with the family consisting of daughter Cathy (John) Montaldo, their sons J.T. and Sam of Putnam Valley, New York, son Tom (Janelle) Leahy and their daughters Kaitlyn, Madeline and Emily of Urbandale, and son Michael (Nicole) Leahy and their sons Owen and Elliot of Enumclaw, Washington. Carmen's bother James Tursi, his wife Jenny and their family reside in Cedar Rapids.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m, on Friday April 17th at Our Lady of Peace Chapel at the Bishop Drumm Care Center, 5837 Winwood Drive, Johnston, Iowa 50131. Carmen's family will be at the Chapel at 9:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter. It is requested that no flowers be sent for the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Bishop Drumm Care Center, 5837 Winwood Drive, Johnston, Ia. 50131 or Mercy Hospice, 5820 Winwood Drive Johnston, Ia. 50131.

Carmen's family wishes to thank each of the Care Givers, Support Staff, Nurses and Certified Assistants, and personnel in all departments at Bishop Drumm Care Center, Mercy Hospital and Mercy Hospice for the excellent care, genuine concern and love provided Carmen during her extended illness.
