Obituary

Carol Jean Thimesch, 76, died Sunday, January 1, 2006, at home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 5, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Urbandale. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Carol Jean Squire, daughter of Frances and Edwin Squire, was born November 28, 1929 in Coffeyville, Kansas. She lived there until meeting and marrying John Edward Thimesch in 1951. A teacher by education at University of Kansas, she became an educator of the eight children born to their union. Their adventures moved the family through four different states, the last home in Iowa, where they remained for the past 37 years. She encouraged her children to develop into contributing citizens, fostering the development of a nurse, a dietitian, a graphic design artist, a podiatrist, a certified medical technologist, a lawyer, a sporting goods store owner, and to complete the cycle, a teacher. As her extended family enlarged, she never forgot to view the world through the eyes of a child; twenty-three grandchildren remember her as a comfortable, inspiring grandmother who looked forward to July 4th and Christmas holidays so that everyone could be together.

After retiring from Iowa Methodist Hospital as a claims administrator in 1994, she found enjoyment in reading, cross-stitch, cooking, playing bridge with friends, and relaxed years with John. She was a member of St. Pius Parish, St. Pius Altar and Rosary Society and St. Pius Bridge Club.

Those left to salute her memory are her husband of 54 years, John of Urbandale; children, Dietre (Mike) McCormick of Carlisle, Devin (Gary) Moore of Rochester, MN, Denise (Joe) Girdner of Winnipeg, Canada, Tegan Thimesch of Chicago, IL, Cheryl (Steve) Dykema of Frisco, TX, Timothy (Michelle) Thimesch of Walnut Creek, CA, Todd (Amy) Thimesch of Marshalltown and Christen Thimesch of Kansas City, KS; 23 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Squire of Alexandria, VA; and one sister, Beverly Holden of Bartlesville, OK.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 4, at Westover Funeral Home, where a prayer service and a salute to honor Carol’s life will be held following visitation. Memorials would follow her wishes to be made to the Carol J. Thimesch Memorial Fund or to St. Pius X Parish Foundation.
