Casimir (Chuck) D. Szymoniak died at home on Wednesday, November 19, 2003. A funeral Mass will be held Friday, November 21 at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. A private burial will be held later.

Chuck was born in Grand Rapids, MI, on January 20, 1920. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin. Chuck and his family moved to Des Moines in 1956 when he took a job with Inland Mills. He retired as owner of Iowa Transportation Services and was president of the Iowa Transportation Club in the '60's. He was an active volunteer at Lutheran Hospital, serving first as a patient escort and then as a surgical waiting room attendant. For his work at the hospital, he was awarded United Way Volunteer of the Year in 2001.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Elaine; daughters, Kathy (Stan) Keeley and Mary (Max) Polson; sons, Peter (Donna), John (MaryAnn) and Tom (Sharon); three grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; eleven step great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandchild.

A prayer service will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Thursday, November 20 at 6 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Holy Trinity Foundation or Mercy Hospice.
