Cecilia “Snooks” Sundal died February 11, 2021, in Des Moines due to complications of a stroke.

She was born September 19, 1933 in Rexfield, Iowa to Frank and Cecilia (Grzanich) Yacinich. She was the youngest of eleven children, and her parents and all ten of her siblings predeceased her. She attended grade school in Lovilia, Iowa until the age of nine when she was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, an inherited eye disease which eventually took her sight as an adult. She attended the Iowa School for the Blind in Vinton and after that she moved to Des Moines and worked for the Peggy Ann Candy Co.

In 1953 she married Haakon E. Sundal, known as Ed, and they lived in Windsor Heights. Ed was employed for many years as a salesman for AMF and then for Pitney Bowes. He died in 1985.

Snooks’ interests included listening to audio books, following basketball and football games of all Iowa universities, and enjoying lunches with friends. She was a delightful and independent woman who will be missed by those who knew her well.

She is survived by her many friends including Dee Boehmke and Linda Walter, both of the Des Moines area, and by her many nieces and nephews, including Michael Thompson of Evanston, Illinois; Patricia Welch of Owensboro, Kentucky; and Mary Cox of Booneville, Iowa.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made in Cecilia’s name to the University of Iowa Institute for Vision Research, in care of the University of Iowa Foundation.
