Obituary

Charles (Chuck) H. Harding Jr., 83, passed away March 9, 2013, in Hospice Care, Johnston Iowa surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 5, 1929 at the family's dairy farm (later becoming a Century Farm) in Grimes, Iowa to Charles Sr. and Carrie (Bauman) Harding.

Chuck graduated from Johnston High School in 1947, attended Iowa State University and was drafted into the Army during the Korean War. Chuck was stationed at Fort Belvoir, Virginia as a Heavy Equipment Operator during his tour.

After leaving the Army, Chuck returned to the family dairy farm in Grimes where he worked along side his father. He met Norma Schultz at Jr. Farm Bureau and married her on March 24, 1957 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Des Moines. Two years later, their first child Phylis was born followed by Paul in 1962 and Evelyn in 1967. Chuck was a life-long farmer and when old enough, Paul farmed by his side.

He was a member of the 4-H, FFA and ROTC. He was also an active member of the Farm Bureau, Rural Youth Group, and Polk County Voting board.

Chuck enjoyed dancing, planting and tending to his garden and flowers, singing, and fishing. He loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, dog Lucky and farm cats.

Chuck is survived by his wife of 57 years, Norma; children, Phylis (Harding) Jones and husband Ron of Roscoe Ill, Paul Harding of Johnston, and Evelyn (Harding) Nelson and spouse Mark Nelson of Webster, WI; seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren; and sister Elizabeth (Harding) Opperman. His memory will be cherished by his wife, Norma and his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Carrie Harding, siblings Frances (Harding) Thiesfeld, John Harding, Mary (Harding) Sullivan and Dorothy Harding (as a child).

Visitation will be at Iles Funeral Homes-Brandt Dallas Center Chapel on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, at the First Presbyterian Church of Grimes followed by burial at Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes.
