Obituary

Charles (Chuck) Hanson, age 88, died on Sunday night, September 21, 2014, in Des Moines at Taylor House Hospice after a heart attack. He was born on September 2, 1926 in Cando, ND and grew up in Davis, SD and Washta, IA. During World War II, he served in the South Atlantic campaign in the Armed Guard aboard the SS Esso Providence as a Navy signalman striker. Upon successful completion of his military duties, he attended and graduated from The University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce in 1949.

Chuck worked for Equitable of Iowa for 40 years, retiring in 1991 as Treasurer and Vice President of Accounting. Chuck was active in Toastmasters, the DAV, and headed up the Polk County judicial nominating committee for many years. After retiring, he volunteered for Senior Corp of Retired Executives (SCORE), counseling new business owners and leading seminars devoted to new businesses.

In Iowa's political circles, he served as treasurer of either the Polk County Democrats or the Iowa Democratic Party for twenty-five years.

Chuck happily spent the last three years of his life surrounded by a very caring and devoted staff of professionals at Ramsey Village. Ramsey was a first class facility that pleased him in every way: nursing care, outings, activities, housekeeping and food.

He is survived by his twin daughters, Julie Hanson and Cathy Short as well as two granddaughters, Clarissa and Hannah Short. Additionally, he is survived by Julie's Weimaraner grand pup, Phoebe.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Ramsey Village, the DAV or Unity Point Hospice.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:30 on Wednesday, September 24 at Iles Dunn's Chapel on Grand Avenue in Des Moines.

A private funeral service with interment with Military Honors will be at Viroqua Cemetery, in Viroqua, WI on Thursday, September 25. He is preceeded in death by both of his parents Hans and Amy, his brother Harry and sister Betty Ann.
