Obituary

Charles Werner, 77, died on June 4, 2006 from injuries sustained in a fall. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6 at Westover Funeral Home where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday morning, June 7 at 11 a.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines

Chuck was born December 11, 1928 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Charles Sr. and Pearl (Hunter) Werner. He was a 42 year salesmen with Tension Envelope Corporation in Des Monies, retiring in 1993. Chuck was a proud graduate of the University of Iowa and a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War. When asked about his years of army service in the sunny climate of Carmel, California, Chuck would always proudly point out that "the enemy" never penetrated the shores of Pebble Beach Golf Club!

Chuck was a longtime member of St. Theresa Catholic Church, the Serra Club, and the Golden Kiwanis and was a former councilman for the City of Windsor Heights for 22 years. Chuck served on the Dowling and Diocesan school boards. He was a voracious reader, a war historian and an avid Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago and Iowa Cubs fan. He loved to golf and will be missed for his tremendous sense of humor. Most of all Chuck loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 56 years, Olivia, his daughter, Angela Davis of Norwalk, his son, Tom and wife Debra of Clive, his son, Jim and wife Laura of Buffalo Grove, IL, and daughter, Mary Bernabe and husband Sam of West Des Moines. He will also be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Erin Davis, Kara and Leah Werner and Nick Bernabe as well as great-grandchildren, Mia and Chaz Jansen. He is also survived by a brother Jim Werner and wife Lorraine of Iowa City, sister Nancy Werner of West Des Moines, stepbrother, Al Oujiri of Cedar Raids, Iowa as well as many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Theresa Foundation, 1230 Merle Hay Road, Des Moines, IA 50311.
