Charley Decker Obituary

Charley Izabel Decker, age 8, of Johnston, Iowa, passed away Thursday, February 16, 2023 at Mercy Hospital with her family at her side.

Charley was born March 26, 2014 in Des Moines to Travis Joseph Decker & Juana Medina Gutierrez. She started life at a mere 3lbs 6oz, and quickly began on her path of proving that the best things in life come in small packages. Charley’s strength and determination were inspirational to all around her, and enabled her to defy her medical diagnoses and accomplish her goals. She endured many challenges in her short life, but always did so with a smile on her face, and never a complaint.

Charley had an infectious smile and giggle that would brighten any room she was in. She loved bright lights, loud music, snuggling, her big brothers dancing, watching her favorite movie Cinderella (1950) with her father, and Spa days with her mother where she would get her hair styled, and her nails done with fun designs. Charley was a daddy’s girl who’s hair and nails became her trademark.

When not enjoying time with her family, Charley attended Beaver Creek Elementary, where she had the most amazing teachers and so many friends who made huge impacts on her and her family.

Survivors include parents, Travis Decker & Juana Gutierrez; brother A J; Grandma Donna Copeland, Dena (Nathan) Spray, Javier (Jeanna) Gutierrez, Agustin Gutierrez, Chelo (Craig) Wainwright and all her cousins. Wesley, Jacob (Haley), Lucas, Sam, Javier (Shelby), Alejandro, Viviana, Sophia, Isabella, Taylor and Jaiden. And her extended family who were with us from the very beginning. Her care staff at Mercy, including all her doctors, rehabilitation specialists and mobility device providers.

In lieu of funeral services, a birthday celebration will be held at a later date.
