Obituary

Charlotte Ann Jones Parks began her homegoing on Friday, May 27, 2011.

Born in Boston, MA on October 25, 1938 to Dr. Leon S. Jones, Sr. and Girtha Thames Jones, Charlotte was the oldest of five children. In 1941, the family moved to Wilmington, NC and later to Des Moines, IA in 1946 where her father was a doctor on staff at the Still College of Osteopathy and Surgery (now Des Moines University).

Charlotte was educated at St. John's Catholic School, Grant School, Callanan Middle School, and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1956. She graduated from Drake University in 1960 with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and in 1983 with a Master's Degree in Education with a Reading Specialization.

As a teacher, Charlotte taught in the Des Moines School system for over 30 years at schools including Bird, Logan, Longfellow, Dunlap, Cowles, and Windsor Elementary among others. An active member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church, she served in the Altar and Rosary Society; as co-chair of the St. Theresa's Blood Drive; as a lector, song leader/cantor, and Eucharistic minister; and as a teacher for their CCD program. She was also a member of both Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the Des Moines Chapter of The Links, Inc., and the Jack and Jill Society of America.

She is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Robert Parks and their four children: Charanne (Michael) Smith of Marlboro, NJ, Gregory of Minneapolis, MN, James (Elizabeth) of Chicago, IL, and Suzanne (Jeremy) Pulcher of Springfield, IL, and three grandchildren, Kendyl Parks, Parker Pulcher, and Jeffrey Pulcher. She is survived by her brothers Leon S. Jones, Jr. of Sun City, CA, David E. Jones of Beverly Hills, CA, and Timothy B. Jones of Los Angeles, CA, sister Merritta "Margi" Florence of Des Moines, and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and brothers- and sisters-in-law. She was preceded in death by her father Leon, her mother Girtha, and her brother, Daniel.

Visitation will be Wednesday at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel. Reciting of the rosary will start at 5 p.m. and visitation will be 5:30 - 7 p.m., to be followed by a Links, Inc. ceremony and a vigil. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Des Moines Links Chapter's Girtha T. Jones Mitchell Educational Fund at Edmunds Academy of Fine Arts.
